Abstract:

Objective: Alzheimer’s disease is an increasingly common condition due to rising life expectancy. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of osteopathic treatment on the quality of life of patients with this condition. Methods: The study included 20 patients recruited from a long-term care facility and divided into two groups: 10 treatment subjects who received a General Osteopathic Treatment (GOT) and 10 control subjects who received sham treatments. Four sessions were conducted every 15 days. The outcome measures were changes in the Behavioral Pain Assessment Scale for Non-Communicative Elderly Patients (ECPA) and the “Get-Up and Go” test. Results: Changes in the ECPA score were statistically significant for patients in both the treatment and control groups (p < 0.0001 and p < 0.001, respectively). Changes in the Get-Up-and-Go test were significant for patients in the treatment group but not significant for those in the control group (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.18, respectively). For both criteria, differences between the groups were not significant. Conclusion: Osteopathy has a role to play in the management of patients with Alzheimer’s disease. However, further research is needed with a larger sample size to investigate the impact of increasing the frequency and number of sessions. (translated by Ostlib)
