Abstract:

Introduction: HOLISTÉA European College of Osteopathy (COE) is a European school that has been training osteopaths since 1987 in France and Germany. Recognizing that the teaching of osteopathy must evolve in tandem with advances in medical, fundamental, and human sciences, the school established a research department in 1994 and formed scientific partnerships to evaluate and promote scientific data related to osteopathy. Methods The objective of this study is to describe a sample of patients who consulted at the school’s clinic between 2011 and 2013 and were the subject of a clinical case report, in order to better understand this population and prepare a clinical study on the efficacy of osteopathic interventions. The data were collected retrospectively and include, in particular, sociodemographic data, reasons for consultation, medical history, and chronic conditions of the patients. Results Women accounted for 64% of the 600 patients included, and patients aged 40 to 59 accounted for 47% of the cases. Employees made up 43% of the sample. Overall, 72% of patients reported at least one chronic condition, and 95% reported at least one history of trauma or surgery. The primary reason for consultation was pain, cited by 94% of patients. Conclusion This study demonstrates the feasibility of a descriptive study of the patient population seeking care at a clinic affiliated with a school that trains osteopaths. Introduction HOLISTÉA Collège Ostéopathique Européen (COE) est une école Européenne formant des ostéopathes depuis 1987 en France et en Allemagne. Considérant que l’enseignement de l’ostéopathie doit évoluer au même titre que les connaissances médicales, fondamentales et humaines, cette école a créé, dès 1994, un département de recherche et a établi des partenariats scientifiques pour évaluer et valoriser des données scientifiques en lien avec l’ostéopathie. Méthodes La présente étude a pour objectif de décrire un échantillon de patients consultant à la clinique de cet établissement entre 2011 et 2013 et faisant l’objet d’un rapport de cas clinique, afin de mieux connaitre cette population et de préparer une étude clinique de l’efficacité des interventions en ostéopathie. Les données sont saisies rétrospectivement et comportent notamment des données sociodémographiques, les motifs de consultation, les antécédents et les maladies chroniques des patients. Résultats Les femmes représentent 64 % des 600 patients inclus et les patients de 40 à 59 ans 47 % des cas. Les employés constituent 43 % de l’échantillon. Globalement, 72 % des patients ont déclaré au moins une maladie chronique et 95 % signalent au moins un antécédent traumatique ou chirurgical. Le principal motif de consultation est la douleur, citée par 94 % des patients. Conclusion Cette étude démontre la faisabilité d’une étude descriptive de la population venant consulter dans la clinique d’une école formant des ostéopathes. Elle donne une première description du profil des patients venant consulter dans une clinique ostéopathique.
