Abstract:

Through specific, described mechanisms of injury, whiplash caused by motor vehicle accident can produce mechanical dysfunction of the cervical spine and related musculature, lumbar spine, sacroiliac joint, thoracic spine, shoulder girdle musculature, and cranial suture. In this review, treatment of whiplash injury to the neck is outlined according to acuity and specific location of dysfunction. Myofascial release may be used early both as direct treatment and as independent exercise. Manipulation of cervical spine joints by articulatory or muscle energy technique is performed in the postacute phase. Techniques for each region (cervical facet, atlantoaxial, and occipitoatlantal joints) are described. Four useful craniosacral release procedures are summarized. Chosen treatments are integrated according to severity of mechanical dysfunction regardless of location. Usual time course of treatment is also summarized.
