Abstract:

Objective Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) currently affect approximately 5% of the French population and are among the most common conditions seen in gastroenterology departments. Nevertheless, the treatment options available to these patients remain limited in terms of effectiveness. The aim of this study is to evaluate the benefits of a comprehensive osteopathic approach and to explore the role of osteopathy within a multidisciplinary treatment plan for IBS. Methods Following patient recruitment within a clinical unit specializing in digestive disorders, an osteopathic evaluation was conducted on 20 consecutive patients, with a total of three sessions per patient, to analyze changes in the main symptoms associated with IBS. The evaluation criteria were based on a mixed-methods (qualitative/quantitative) prospective study of symptoms (pain, difficulty digesting, constipation, diarrhea, bloating and abdominal distension, gas, false urges, gastroesophageal reflux, nausea, vomiting, and stress). Statistical analysis was performed using Statistica software and the BiostaTGV application, and comparisons of paired samples were conducted using Friedman tests. Results At the conclusion of this preliminary study, analysis of the progression of these various symptoms reveals a marked improvement in all of them at every time point during the study. Conclusion The results demonstrate that osteopathic therapy, due to its analgesic effect, its impact on the full range of symptoms, and its good tolerability, is a first-line treatment to be offered to patients suffering from IBS. Abstract original language:
