Abstract:

Introduction: For some years now, French oncologists have been questioning the need to evaluate non-drug approaches as supportive care, and particularly osteopathy, in order to include new therapeutic approaches within their services. This interventional pre-study aims to establish the added value of an osteopathic intervention in response to somato-psychic symptoms in participants with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Method: Therapeutic support was offered to a subset of eight participants aged 2 to 7 suffering from ALL at Robert Debré Hospital (GHU APHP Nord–Université Paris Cité). An initial assessment and five osteopathic consultations were carried out for each participant throughout their hospital stay. During this period, hetero-evaluations were carried out by the medical profession using quality of life and pain scales. Results: Quantitative data showed no significant change in the pre-defined evaluation criteria. On the other hand, qualitative feedback on patient requests showed encouraging results, with osteopathic treatment receiving positive feedback with regard to symptoms observed in the spine, the lower limbs and digestive system. Discussion: The results obtained do not allow us to claim the efficacy of osteopathic treatment on the intensity of pain observed in paediatric hematology. Nonetheless, this study will have enabled us to establish the needs and possible responses adapted to certain associated signs.
