Abstract:

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of osteopathic treatment targeting the entry points to the emotional brain in patients with generalized anxiety disorder. Methods: A specific osteopathic intervention protocol consisting of two sessions spaced 3 weeks apart was administered to 99 patients with generalized anxiety disorder to measure its effectiveness using the Hamilton Anxiety Scale. The secondary objective was to evaluate the impact of this protocol on chronic pain using the visual analog scale. Results: The mean Hamilton Anxiety Scale score decreased from 29.5 to 13.7, a 53.6% reduction (p < 0.01); the psychological subscore decreased from 16.1 to 8.0 (a 50.3% reduction; p < 0.01)), and the somatic subscore decreased from 13.4 to 5.7 (a 57.5% decrease; p < 0.01). The mean VAS score for chronic pain decreased from 5.2 to 3.2, representing a 38.5% reduction (p < 0.05). Conclusion: These results appear to validate the efficacy of a specific osteopathic intervention based on neurological principles. The results are all the more interesting given that the study was conducted partly during the COVID-19 pandemic and partly in the post-COVID period—that is, in a particularly anxiety-inducing context. They are statistically equivalent to the findings of the Dixon study, which included five osteopathic sessions compared to two in our protocol. (translated by Ostlib)
