Abstract:

Purpose: To determine if a relationship exists between osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) and intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with glaucoma. Materials and Methods: Patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) (n=46 eyes) and patients without POAG (n=32 eyes) were randomized into a treatment group, a sham treatment group, and a control group. The treatment and sham-treatment groups had IOP measurements immediately prior to and after OMT or sham-treatment, and again one week later. The control group had IOP measurements once, and again one week later without OMT or sham-treatment. Each pressure measurement for a given patient was performed by the same person who was blinded to the group the patient was assigned. Results: Using the independent-samples t-test, patients with POAG had a significant difference between treatment and sham groups (treatment (mmHg), 205.02; sham, 15.964.23; P.001) and treatment and control groups (treatment, 205.02; control, 17.203.22; P.005). There was no significant difference between sham and control groups (sham, 15.964.23; control, 17.203.22; P.182). For patients without POAG, there was a significant difference between treatment and control groups (treatment, 14.751.66; control, 16.251.88; P.020). Using the one way analysis of variance, comparing all pressure measurements before and following OMT, there was a difference in IOP measurements in patients with POAG (P=.076). IOP was lowered following treatment for one week (means; before treatment 19.1; one week post-treatment 16.5). Conclusions: There was a significant difference between treatment and sham-treatment groups for patients with POAG; however, the same difference did not exist for patients without POAG. There was a significant difference between treatment and control groups for both patients with POAG and patients without POAG. The means demonstrated a lowering of IOP using OMT.
